First: what causes the squeak?
A squeak is friction or movement, not “bad wood.” It usually comes from one of these:
Wood moving against a fastener (shank rubbing)
Subfloor moving on joists (loose sheathing or missed adhesive)
Board-to-board movement from seasonal expansion/contraction
Fastener spacing or angle that allows micro-lift
So the question isn’t just “which fastener squeaks least,” it’s “which full system moves least.”
Cleats: why they’re often quieter long-term
Cleats are L-shaped fasteners (often 16–18 gauge) driven with a flooring nailer at a consistent angle. They tend to:
Hold boards firmly while allowing controlled seasonal movement
Reduce “fastener pop” compared to some smooth nails
Provide consistent seating if subfloor is solid and flat
When a floor squeaks with cleats, it’s often pointing to subfloor movement rather than the cleat itself.
Staples: strong hold, but technique matters
Staples (commonly 15.5 gauge) have two legs, which can clamp boards very tightly. Benefits include strong holding power, but they can be more sensitive to:
Incorrect air pressure (overdriving can crush tongues)
Poor subfloor flatness (creates voids that flex)
Very wide planks that want to move seasonally
Staples can be quiet and excellent when installed correctly. They can also be noisy if overdriven or used in conditions where the floor needs a bit more “give.”
Nails: common, but not all nails behave the same
“Nails” can mean a few different things:
Flooring cleat nails (often what people call “nails” but are technically cleats)
Finish nails (used for trim or face-nailing specific areas)
Common nails (not typical for modern hardwood field installation)
For hardwood field installation, cleats are generally preferred over generic nails because they’re designed for flooring movement and consistent angle driving.
What changes squeaks more than the fastener type
1) Subfloor thickness and stiffness
A bouncy subfloor is a squeak factory. Upgrading or reinforcing subflooring, when needed, can reduce noise dramatically.
2) Subfloor attachment to joists
If the subfloor isn’t tight to the joists, you can get squeaks even with perfect fastener choice. Best practice often includes:
Screwing loose subfloor panels into joists
Using construction adhesive where appropriate (during re-sheathing or major work)
3) Fastener spacing and layout
Too wide spacing can allow movement. Too tight spacing can stress tongues on some species. The correct pattern depends on:
Species hardness
Plank width
Manufacturer guidance
Subfloor type
4) Moisture and acclimation
Wood installed too wet or too dry relative to the home’s typical conditions will move more, and movement equals sound. Controlled acclimation and indoor climate stability matter.
5) Glue-assist systems
For certain wide-plank engineered installations, a glue-assist (a bead of approved adhesive plus cleats) can reduce movement and noise by adding continuous support.
If you already have squeaks: what’s the practical fix?
Fixes depend on access.
From below (best case: accessible crawlspace)
Shim gaps between subfloor and joist (carefully, no lifting)
Add screws through subfloor into joists
Apply construction adhesive in targeted areas
From above (finished ceiling below, no access)
Locate the squeak precisely
Use approved repair methods (often specialized screws or injection systems)
Understand that some surface fixes reduce noise but may not eliminate structural movement
A professional evaluation helps determine whether you’re hearing subfloor movement or board movement.
Cleats, staples, and nails all can perform well, but squeak control depends most on subfloor stiffness, correct fastening technique, spacing, and moisture management. If you want a quieter hardwood floor, design the install around your home’s structure, not just the product you like.
