Why LVP Sounds Loud Upstairs (and Why Rugs Aren’t the Real Fix)

In two-story homes, the main complaint is impact noise: footsteps, chair legs, kids sprinting, and that “hollow tap” that travels like it has a mission. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is resilient and durable, but its rigidity and floating installation can turn a subfloor into a drumhead if the assembly isn’t built for acoustics.

Airborne noise (voices, TV) matters too, but most late-night Googling is triggered by impact noise. That’s where IIC (Impact Insulation Class) becomes your best friend.

IIC vs STC: What Homeowners Should Actually Target

  • IIC (Impact Insulation Class): How well a floor/ceiling assembly blocks footfall-type noise.

  • STC (Sound Transmission Class): How well it blocks airborne noise (speech, music).

Target ranges (practical, not theoretical):

  • Comfortable family-home quiet: Aim for IIC 55+ (better if you can).

  • If you’re hearing every step now: You’re often in the IIC 35–45 zone.

  • STC: If you’re improving the floor assembly, aim STC 50+.

Important: manufacturer “IIC 72” claims often come from lab-tested, ideal assemblies, not your home’s real joists, penetrations, HVAC returns, and stairs. Treat marketing numbers like weather forecasts: useful, but not a guarantee.

The LVP Soundproofing Stack (From Subfloor to Shoe Sole)

1) Subfloor stiffness (the unsexy hero)
A bouncy subfloor amplifies impact noise. For wood-framed second floors:

  • Tighten fasteners (eliminate squeaks) before any LVP goes down.

  • Address deflection: added plywood layer (properly screwed) can reduce “drum” effect.

2) Underlayment: choose for impact noise, not softness
Underlayment for LVP is not carpet padding. Too thick or too spongy can cause joint stress and lock failure. You want an acoustic underlayment that:

  • Is approved by the LVP manufacturer (warranty matters).

  • Has documented performance for IIC (ideally with a tested assembly similar to yours).

  • Has compression resistance so it doesn’t “pump” under furniture.

Common underlayment types:

  • IXPE / foam attached pad (often 1mm): Better than nothing, but limited for serious upstairs impact noise.

  • Rubber/cork blends (thin acoustic layers): Often stronger for impact reduction, but must be compatible with LVP and not exceed allowed thickness.

  • Mass-loaded vinyl (MLV): Great concept for mass, but more commonly used in wall/ceiling assemblies and tricky under floating LVP unless professionally detailed.

Rule of thumb: If you want a meaningful change upstairs, you usually need an acoustic underlayment that’s purpose-built for IIC improvement and installed perfectly.

3) The ceiling below: your biggest lever (if you’re willing)
If you can modify the ceiling under the noisy room, you can dramatically improve sound.

  • Add insulation in the joist bays (helps airborne noise).

  • Use resilient channel or sound isolation clips (reduces impact transmission).

  • Add a second layer of drywall with damping compound for higher STC.

This is where people jump from “still loud” to “finally peaceful.”

The 7 Most Common Reasons “Soundproof LVP” Fails

  1. No perimeter isolation: If LVP touches baseboards/walls, impact energy transfers into framing. Maintain expansion gap and avoid hard bridges.

  2. Wrong underlayment thickness: Too thick can create bounce and joint chatter.

  3. Underlayment seams not taped: Small gaps become noise leaks.

  4. Subfloor not flat: Creates flex points and hollow spots.

  5. Stairs and landings act as amplifiers: Transition details matter.

  6. HVAC penetrations: Duct/return paths leak sound like open windows.

  7. Furniture feet: Hard plastic gliders can undo a lot. Felt + rugs help, but they’re “maintenance,” not engineering.

A Practical Spec Checklist for Two-Story LVP

Use this to stay technical in a shop-at-home consult:

  • Confirm floor type: wood-framed vs concrete (second story is usually wood-framed).

  • Subfloor flatness and fastening plan (squeak elimination).

  • Underlayment: manufacturer-approved acoustic underlayment, documented IIC gains.

  • Perimeter isolation and transitions (no hard contact).

  • Stair nosing system compatible with acoustic plan.

  • If noise sensitivity is high: evaluate ceiling improvements below.
